What this covers

Cookies are small files a site stores in your browser. Related technologies — localStorage, sessionStorage — do the same job without being sent back to the server on every request. This policy covers both, and supplements the Privacy Policy.

What we do not use

  • No advertising cookies, ad networks or retargeting pixels.
  • No third-party analytics — no Google Analytics, no Meta Pixel, no session replay.
  • No cross-site tracking, and no data sold or shared with data brokers.
  • No fingerprinting.

Every entry in the tables below is either required for the app to function, required to take payment, or a preference stored on your own device.

Strictly necessary cookies

Set by Clerk, our authentication provider, to sign you in and keep you signed in. Without them you cannot use the app at all. Exact names may vary slightly between Clerk versions and between development and production.

CookieSet byPurposeExpires
__sessionClerkHolds your short-lived session token; identifies you on every requestSession / ~1 minute rotation
__client_uatClerkRecords when the client was last authenticated, so the app knows to refresh1 year
__clerk_db_jwtClerkDevelopment-only token used when running the app locallySession
__refresh_*ClerkRefreshes an expiring session without making you sign in againSession

Clerk’s own handling of these is described in its privacy documentation. Blocking them means you cannot stay signed in.

Payment cookies

When you open the checkout, Paddle.com Market Ltd loads its own checkout in an overlay and sets cookies on its domain to run the transaction, prevent fraud and remember checkout state. We do not control these and cannot read them. They appear only if you start a purchase.

Set byPurposeWhen
PaddleCheckout session state, fraud prevention, tax location detectionOnly when you open checkout

See Paddle’s privacy notice for details.

Local storage — your preferences, on your device

These are written to your browser’s local storage and never transmitted to our servers. They exist so the app looks the way you left it. Clearing your browser data resets them to defaults; nothing else breaks.

KeyWhat it remembers
braindump-themeLight or dark mode
braindump-nav-mode-v1Sidebar or floating dock navigation
braindump-notes-widthWidth of the notes column
braindump-cat-widthWidth of the category column
braindump-ruled-linesWhether ruled notebook lines are shown in the editor
braindump-shortcutsYour keyboard shortcut preferences
braindump-stopwatch-v1Stopwatch state, so a running timer survives a refresh
braindump-hidden-summaries-v1Which AI summaries you have dismissed

The braindump- prefix is a leftover from the product’s previous name. It is cosmetic and does not affect what the keys do.

How to control them

  • Browser settings — every major browser lets you view, block and delete cookies and local storage per site. Blocking the Clerk cookies will sign you out and prevent sign-in.
  • Clear the app’s preferences — clear site data for dumpnotes.app and the interface resets to defaults. Your notes are stored on the server and are unaffected.
  • Private browsing — everything is discarded when you close the window.

Changes

If we add, remove or change a cookie or local storage key, this table is updated at the same time. Material changes — anything requiring consent — are announced in advance as described in the Privacy Policy.
